MORE EQUALIZERS AND COMPRESSORS
Here we go again, part 2 of our top ten list of high quality, affordable audio plugins available today on the market. Just a reminder: we are looking for plugins that are absolutely top notch in quality but also free or very, very affordable. This is the second part of our top ten.
We're still going to talk about equalizers and dynamic processors.
After all, they are the bread and butter of any mixing engineer.
We'll post another top ten list (which it will effectively become a top twenty ...) very soon with other kinds of processors (reverbs, modulation, special effects etc.)
But for now, let's stick with the fundamentals: EQs and DYNAMIC PROCESSORS
6. Clipper: KLICP and KCLIP PRO by KAZROG
Price: 9.99$ for KClip and 24.99$ for KClip Pro.
So, what is this?
It's a clipper.
I know what you're thinking: what's so exciting about a clipper? Why do you even NEED a clipper?
That's what I thought so too. Because I never liked how clippers sounded.
Until I found KClip.
This thing changed my mind completely about clippers.
It sounds superb.
I don't know how they do it at Kazrog, but this little thing completely destroys all the other clippers I tried in my life. Even clippers that are much more expensive than this one.
It's so good it actually made me rethink about how to use clippers in a mixing context. And I am very, very happy about it, because when you have a clipper that sounds this good, then you realize that it may be very, very useful, in many different situations.
Wanna hear it?
Well, check this video out. It's from the YouTube Channel "MixBus TV" , one of my favourite channels about mixing - and that's because they REALLY know what they're talking about.
Here it is (good headphones highly recommended):
You can find KClip here.
7. Mastering Equalizer: SLICK EQ M by TOKYO DAWN
Price: 50 euros.
So, yet another Tokyo Dawn plugin?
You may wonder: am I affiliated with Tokyo Dawn?
Not at all.
It's just that their plugins are so good, and so affordable, I just can't help but recommend them.
So, we have another EQ. This time it's a mastering eq, or a buss eq.
I know, I know. The difference between a regular eq and a mastering or buss eq may be quite blurry. I won't get into that discussion. But this plugin is exactly what an ideal mastering eq should look and sound like.
So, what's so great about this plugin?
Short answer: everything.
Long answer: take a look at this video.
Here you go.
My favourite features:
- the stereo pan processors for individual bands (stereo or mid/range) , really unique and very, very useful
- the learn function, a very well implemented and a real time saver
- the "mono-izer" function for the low frequency range (useful especially for music with lots of bass content to be played in clubs)
The only "downside" for this plugin is that there's no free edition (differently from most other plugins by Tokyo Dawn), so 50 euros is your ticket for this beauty. But it's still very cheap, especially for the quality that it provides.
8. Mastering Compressor: KOTELNIKOV by TOKYO DAWN
Price: Completely Free (40 euros for Gentleman Edition)
Yes, another Tokyo Dawn plugin.
But again, this is justified by the fact that we are looking for high quality and inexpensive plugins.
It doesn't get any more inexpensive than free, right?
And if we talk quality, well, this plugin with a funny name is absolutely the best there is, in terms of transparent, versatile compressors.
The key word here is "TRANSPARENT".
This is really where Kotelnikov shines. I honestly don't know ANY compressor, no matter the price, more transparent than this.
The secret must be in the sort of "double", "parallel" processing happening in Kotelnikov.
It's a bit complicated, but basically Kotelnikov performs two kinds of dynamic processing at the same time. One on "peak" content and one on "RMS" content . And you have a good degree control on both. This, together with the usual extraordinary attention to quality and detail by Tokyo Dawn, generates the ultimate transparent compressor.
You don't trust me?
Let 's see what Dan Worral has to say about it:
Just one final word: as usual with Tokyo Dawn, the free version is absolutely fully functional, and provides all the fundamental functions and much more. The Gentleman Edition (GE) provides a few more extra features, but nothing crucial for the vast majority of applications.
You can find the free version of Kotelnikov here and Kotelnikov GE right here
9. Special Purpose: BASS PROFESSOR by SONIC ANOMALY
Price: completeley FREE
Now, this is really a hidden gem.
Not many people, not even expert audio engineers, know about this plugin.
It's called Bass Professor (mark 2) and it's a plugin designed to shape the tone of bass sounds, especially bass guitars.
So, what's so special about it?
Pretty much everything.
EASE to use.
And, most of all, it allows you get QUICKLY and EFFECTIVELY to a bass sound that REALLY cuts through the mix.
We all know how difficult it is to deal with bass sounds, right?
It takes time. Patience. A good sounding room. And more time and more patience.
Bass professor changed that for me.
Let me show you the interface, because it's very interesting.
You see those 6 faders at the bottom? That's where you shape your bass sound.
And their names - Fullness, Articulation, Presence etc - perfectly describe, in plain english, how your bass sound will be reshaped. Very easy, very immediate, very effective. Don't be afraid of exaggerating a bit. That's how you understand what each fader actually does.
Once you understand that - and it doesn't take much at all, you just need to listen carefully - then just follow your taste and ears.
Now, I don't know exactly how it works. I am pretty sure there's some dynamic processing going on, and some eq going on, and maybe some transient processing going on as well.
What I know for sure is that I can't live without this plugin anymore.
It's that good.
And it's free.
And by the way, Sonic Anomaly makes other awesome free plugins as well.
Check them out, right now.
You will thank me later.

10. Analog Style Equalizer: SONEQ by SONIMUS
Price: Completely FREE
Of course, we couldn't forget to mention, in our top ten list, an eq with an "analog" vibe to it!
And here its, SONEQ from SONIMUS.
Completely free, completely awesome.
Here it is:
SONEQ combines different features from different classic analog equalizers, and the combination is just terrific. Simple to use, three bands, great mojo, plus analog saturation.
What more do you want?
Well, actually, if you want even more, you could get SONEQ PRO, which is its bigger brother, with 4 bands and a bit more flexibility. It's 59$, so still reasonable. Really really awesome. Here's the PRO version:
10 plus 1 - HONORABLE MENTIONS
So, this is the end of our TOP TEN of the best INEXPENSIVE and HIGH QUALITY audio plugins available today.
We only considered Equalizers and Dynamic processors.
We will take a look at other categories of plugins very shortly.
But, before we go, we must aknowledge that there's more.
There's many, many inexpensive, high quality plugins nowadays.
We know we left out some that could well deserve to be in the top ten.
So, here's some very honorable mentions.
