THE MOST IMPORTANT MIXING TOOL
Let's talk about the most important thing for anyone interested in mixing and mastering their own music. The single, most important tool of all. You might think it's about your audio interface, or your microphones, or your speakers, or your DAW or plugins. These elements are obviously important, but there's one that is definitely more important. One that can literally make or break your ability to mix your music at a high level.
Can you guess it?
How do you get a bass sound that is FULL, CLEAR, POWERFUL, PUNCHY, but not "MUDDY" or "CLOUDY"? How do you make it "LIVELY" but not "INVASIVE"?
Good question. Thank you for asking.
Indeed, this is a problem that many people find really difficult when mixing music.
It doesn't have to be.
In this post I will give you some simple guidelines, in plain English and with audio examples, about how to mix bass very effectively (especially bass guitar, but not only). Let's go.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST ...
So, here we are, this is part 4 (and last) of our journey in the realm of high quality, inexpensive plugin. We have some very, very good ones so ... let's start!
Well, originally the idea was to make a TOP TEN list of super-high quality audio plugins. But then I realized that ten is just not enough. So ... this top ten is actually a TOP TWENTY. Doesn't matter. The are all really great plugins. The more, the better.
MORE EQUALIZERS AND COMPRESSORS
Here we go again, part 2 of our top ten list of high quality, affordable audio plugins available today on the market. Just a reminder: we are looking for plugins that are absolutely top notch in quality but also free or very, very affordable. This is the second part of our top ten.
Here's the challenge. Is it possibile to find TOP QUALITY audio plugins that also are very, very AFFORDABLE? Or even ... FREE? I dare to say that the answer is YES. This wasn't the case just a few years ago. If you wanted good quality plugins you had to pay. Sometimes a lot. The cheap stuff just wasn't good enough for professional use. Today, things are different. VERY different.
Ok, let's do a quick test.
Listen carefully (headphones highly recommended) to these two mixes of the same track, and try to decide which one you like better.
The difference will be subtle, so pay attention to the details:
